- The Master’s Program in Computer Science (http://csmasters.uchicago.edu/) is a professionally oriented MS in Computer Science degree program in the Department of Computer Science. Our rigorous curriculum covers theory, programming, and applications and is targeted for students interested in tech careers in Software Engineering, Data Analytics, Product Management and Application Development.

- To accomplish this, the Student Events & Programming Coordinator strategically determine what programming is most beneficial to the MPCS populations and design and deliver programming on time and within a set budget. Programming will include, but is not limited to, new student orientation, current student events, graduation celebrations and alumni events.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes day-to-day event logistics, with minimal guidance from others. Cultivate and maintain relationships with vendors and departments to support events.

  • Engages with current students to assess needs and see what events might be the most beneficial. Propose new ideas to MPCs leadership, including timing and budgeting for all events. Plan and implement all approved events.

  • Continually monitors events all around campus, specifically within CS, the PSD or UChicago Grad, to keep MPCS students aware of programming of interest. Maintain relationships with other units around the university to increase awareness of events and activities.

  • Gathers feedback from students on all events and track which are the most effective at making students feel a part of the MPCS, CS and UChicago communities.

  • Plans community building events and study breaks throughout the academic year.

  • Develops plans for MPCS specific graduation celebrations, as needed, depending on the quarter. For most quarters, this will include planning a MPCS specific event according to program needs. Lead event planning and communications.

  • Point person in the MCPS to assist with coordination of divisional convocation events.

  • Responsible for the distribution and continual monitoring of the quarterly MPCS graduating student survey with the goal of receiving as many responses as possible. This requires timely communications and follow through, even after graduation.

  • Leads the MPCS alumni relations efforts including annual MPCS alumni events in Chicago, San Francisco and New York, and Seattle with possible other cities added. May include travel to event locations.

  • Open lines of communication with alumni to determine location and timing of new events. Work with alumni in host cities for assistance with venue selection and marketing of events.

  • Designs event communications and invitations; scout locations, set menus and manage guest lists and day-of event details. Provide post-event reports, including evaluations, as needed.

  • Maintains MPCS LinkedIn Alumni group membership and communications.

  • Maintains MPCS alumni mail list.

  • Designs and order MPCS branded items for students and alumni.

  • Develops a communications plan to engage all admitted students and effectively share important information about starting the MPCS. Write all communications and distribute them through Slate. Work individually with students to provide any assistance on starting the MPCS. Maintain the admitted student mail list.

  • Leads the annual MPCS new student orientation. Work with MPCS leadership to develop a comprehensive, week-long new student orientation to prepare students for the start of the MPCS. Orientation programming includes placement exams, welcome events, faculty meetings, course planning, bootcamps and advising. Create any online orientation materials, including videos, and design and launch Canvas site for distribution of information.

  • Responsible for the coordination and implementation of all MPCS placement exams on a quarterly basis, with the biggest offering of exams in the fall. Working directly with the faculty that design and grade the exams, the Student Events & Programming Coordinator will set exam times, schedule rooms, conduct check in, line up proctors and graders, update website, send out announcements and instructions and communicate results to students. Placement exams include the programming and math exams, the Data Analysis exam and the Advanced Algorithms exam.

  • Launches MPCS technology bootcamps, including the Unix Bootcamp and C Programming Bootcamp. Work directly with the faculty instructor to plan and implement events, set timing, location, technical needs, and bootcamp staffing. Manage all bootcamp announcements, registration and coordination.

  • Responsible for management of new MPCS students from the time they accept their offer of admission to the time they begin classes. Most new students will start the program in Summer and Autumn quarters, but this also includes any part-time students that begin in Winter or Spring. This includes talking to new students individually to help with starting the program, taking exams and registering for class.

  • Works closely with the MPCS Director of Admissions and the MPCS Associate Director of Student Affairs to communicate any issues with incoming students. This includes students that decline their admissions, those that request deferrals, and those that need to postpone start dates. This also includes the management of new Autumn admits that have interest in taking summer MPCS immersion classes.

  • Executes day-to-day event logistics, and other moderately complex assignments with some guidance from others.

  • Assists with research, including vendor selection and contract negotiation. Keeps track of all expenses, prepares reports on costs, using existing procedures to solve moderately complex problems as they arise.

  • Works to implement ideas for improvement as they are identified in addition to providing post-event feedback on turnout and vendor performance with direction from others.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Experience:

  • Knowledge and skills developed through at least 5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • Experience in working with students in a university environment.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Experience using U of C systems, and Buysite, GEMS.

  • Experience with Google Drive, Google Calendar.

Working Conditions

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule after the initial probationary period.
  • Flexibility to work various hours including evenings, as needed.

  • Open to occasional travel, as needed.
